Increasing Post-16 bus prices and a consultation
For the 2022/2023 it costs £540 per post-16 student under current subsidised transport policy in Cornwall. Within this current policy Cornwall Council pays £4,400 per student, which keeps the cost down for 1,000 students across the Duchy. Due to the increase of demand alongside the Conservative Council has proposed that the price parents pay is in line with inflation, that being £700.
Though the increase in understandable In terms of balancing the books, it however overlooks the basic understanding of the increased cost of bills and food within the current price of living crisis. An increase of this bill will be too difficult for the majority of the population, especially with the afore mentioned issues alongside stagnate pay within the duchy. This also does poke one major hole in the current budget put forward by the Unitary Authority of Cornwall. It was stated that the by Cornwall Counil that the large increase for Council tax would be used to ensure that services can continue to be offered to the citezens of Cornwall. However, the increase does not support this view. A portion of the population will be unable to send their children to education. Another portion will not have any choice. Unfortunatley, this comes across as the Unitary authority squeezing ever last penny out of families who need support, not a “poor tax”.
Cornwall Council is running a consultation in regards to the post 16 student transport subsidy. This can be found at this link : https://letstalk.cornwall.gov.uk/home-to-school-transport-post-16
