A request for homes - From the Council who hasn't helped the housing crisis

Cornwall Council has made a request for volunteer households. With the increasing prices associated with both the price of living crisis alongside the media’s obsession of encouraging mass movement to Cornwall, buying a house in one’s homeland is becoming increasingly difficult and near impossible for the peoples of Cornwall. For this reason, the Council has decided to ask for the community to support those of us who do not have homes, and cannot be under a safe roof to lend rooms or annexes. I am sure that our Cornish community will help, as we always do, those in need. Times are hard, but those who can do tend to help.

However, the Council cannot wriggle free of it’s responsibility. Whilst arguing for a mayor position, they did not fight for control of our housing market. Nor did they fight for affordable housing to be truly affordable for the Cornish people. Housing in the Duchy is based on a national average, and whilst thousands of homes are built here in Cornwall, very few people can afford them. Cornwall is one of the poorest areas within the European continent. And while it can be easy to blame only the Conservative party for the housing situation, the Liberal democrats have equally had opportunity to fight for Cornwall, and have failed in much the same way.

So whilst Cornwall and her people, once again, help our community and those who are struggling no matter how difficult, we must not forget who created these issues. And who made them worse, when they could have helped.
